You are not your brain!
Recent articles on neurotransmitters and brain imaging have linked brain functions to our choices, peculiarities and differences. In extreme cases such as psychopathic and addicted brain studies, researchers have also attempted to make the intellectual jump that we are no more than our brains. This is the predominant bias in our current data-driven, sense-perceived mode of scientific theory that favors measured phenomena over the experiential.
A different view attempts to understand our essence as utilizing our brain and body as an instrument of expression. Sit quietly for a moment… Do you perceive an observer/watcher within that is connected but not the same as your body and mind perceptions? This reality which could be called Essence, Soul, or Spirit defines us as humans and although connected to our bodies, transcends it. This is why the extrapolation of the research on simple organisms to our daily human experiences falls miserably short. The implications of these subtle concepts on freedom, wisdom, love, and choice are enormous. No amount of brain health effort buys us the inner joy and serenity that comes with a fundamental shift in our self-perception as spiritual beings with a purpose in the universe. The post-modern philosophies ignoring this principle have given rise to human despair and nihilism.
